If you've spent any time shopping for diamonds, you've probably come across the term "fluorescence" on a certification report — and immediately felt confused. Is it a good thing? A bad thing? Should you pay extra for it? Avoid it entirely?
Here's the honest answer: fluorescence is neither good nor bad. It's simply a characteristic. And understanding it could save you a significant amount of money on your diamond purchase.
What Is Diamond Fluorescence?
Fluorescence is the tendency of a diamond to emit a soft glow when exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light. Think about the black lights at a club or the UV rays in natural sunlight. About 30% of diamonds have some level of fluorescence. In the vast majority of cases, the glow is blue — though extremely rare diamonds can fluoresce yellow, green, or red.
Fluorescence is graded on GIA and IGI certificates as: None, Faint, Medium, Strong, or Very Strong.
The Misconception That Costs You Money
For decades, the diamond industry treated fluorescence as a flaw. Jewelers were taught that it made diamonds look "milky" or "oily." And frankly, that scared a lot of buyers away from perfectly beautiful — and significantly cheaper — diamonds.
Here's the reality: in the vast majority of cases, fluorescence has zero visible effect on a diamond's appearance in normal lighting. You will never see your diamond glowing blue at dinner, in an office, or under typical indoor lighting. It's only under direct UV light that you'd notice anything at all.
When Fluorescence Actually Helps
Here's something most jewelers won't tell you: medium blue fluorescence can actually make a lower-color diamond look whiter. Diamonds with I or J color grades (slightly warm) often appear a full grade whiter when they have medium to strong blue fluorescence. The blue glow counteracts the yellow tint.
This means you can buy a diamond with a slightly lower color grade and medium fluorescence, and it will look just as white as a higher-grade diamond — for significantly less money. That's not a flaw. That's a smart buy.
When to Be Cautious
There are two scenarios where you might want to avoid fluorescence. First, very strong fluorescence in extremely high-color diamonds (D, E, F) can sometimes create a slightly hazy or oily appearance. This is rare, but it does happen. If you're buying a D-color diamond with very strong fluorescence, look at it in person first.
Second, if you spend a lot of time under direct UV light (certain medical or laboratory environments), visible fluorescence might be distracting. For the other 99% of buyers, this isn't a concern.
What the Certification Tells You
On a GIA or IGI report, fluorescence is listed in its own section. "None" is self-explanatory. "Faint" is barely measurable and never visible. "Medium" is the sweet spot for value. "Strong" and "Very Strong" offer the biggest discounts — just make sure you've seen the diamond in person.
