Diamond fluorescence is one of the most misunderstood aspects of diamond buying. Some people avoid it at all costs, while others seek it out for better value. Let's separate fact from fiction and help you decide if fluorescence matters for your diamond.
What Is Diamond Fluorescence?
Fluorescence is the glow some diamonds emit when exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light. About 25-35% of diamonds show some degree of fluorescence. Under normal lighting, you won't see it — it only appears under UV light (like blacklight or direct sunlight).
Fluorescence Grades
- None: No fluorescence (most common, most expensive)
- Faint: Barely detectable, no visual impact
- Medium: Noticeable under UV, minimal impact on appearance
- Strong: Visible under UV, may affect appearance in some conditions
- Very Strong: Significant glow under UV
Does Fluorescence Affect Appearance?
In most cases: No. Under normal lighting conditions, fluorescence has zero impact on a diamond's beauty. The "blue haze" effect only occurs in rare cases with very strong fluorescence AND lower color grades (I-M).
The Truth About Fluorescence
Myth: Fluorescent diamonds look cloudy or hazy.
Reality: Only very strong fluorescence in low-color diamonds may show slight haziness. Medium or faint fluorescence in D-H color diamonds has no visible effect.
Myth: Fluorescent diamonds are worth less.
Reality: Fluorescent diamonds typically cost 10-20% less than non-fluorescent stones. This is because of perception, not quality.
Myth: You should always avoid fluorescence.
Reality: Fluorescence can actually enhance appearance in some cases. Blue fluorescence can make I-K color diamonds appear whiter in sunlight.

When to Avoid Fluorescence

For most buyers: Faint or Medium fluorescence is perfectly fine. You'll save 10-15% without any visual difference. The savings can go toward a better cut, larger size, or the setting of your dreams.
