Walking into a jewelry store can be intimidating — you're making a significant purchase of something you don't fully understand. The best defense is preparation: knowing exactly what to ask. Here are the questions every smart buyer should put to their jeweler before buying a ring.
"Is the Diamond Certified, and by Whom?"
This is non-negotiable. Ask which independent lab graded the diamond (GIA and IGI are the gold standards) and see the actual report. A certified diamond has verified carat, color, clarity, and cut. No certificate, no confidence — this is the single most important question.
"Can I See the Diamond Under a Microscope or Loupe?"
A reputable jeweler is happy to show you the stone up close. Look at cut quality, clarity, and whether it matches the certificate. Reluctance to show you the diamond is a red flag. Seeing it under magnification also confirms the stone is the exact one on the report.
"What Is Your Return and Exchange Policy?"
Ask confidentially before buying. How many days do you have to return? Is there a restocking fee? Can you exchange the stone for an upgrade later? A transparent, generous return policy signals a confident jeweler. Never buy from someone who won't put their policy in writing.
"What Does the Warranty Cover, and for How Long?"
Ask what's covered — loose stones, repairs, re-polishing — and for how long. A good jeweler stands behind their work. Ask whether cleaning and inspections are free (they should be), and whether they cover stone loss due to faulty setting. Know your protection before you need it.
"Can I Get This Ring Resized, and Is It Free?"
Ring sizing is common, so ask up front. Is the first resize free? Within what window? Some metals and settings are harder (or impossible) to resize, so confirm your ring is resizable and what it would cost.
"What Is the Full Price, With No Surprises?"
Ask for the complete, all-in price including taxes and any fees. Confirm whether there's markup, whether the price is negotiable, and whether financing is available (and its terms). Get everything in writing so there are no surprises at the register.
Ask With Confidence
These questions aren't aggressive — they're smart, and any honest jeweler expects them. A jeweler who answers openly, shows you the certificate, and stands behind a fair policy is one you can trust. At Lara Jewels, we welcome every one of these questions — because you deserve complete confidence in your ring.
