Diamond Clarity Guide
Diamond clarity refers to the absence of inclusions and blemishes. The GIA Diamond Clarity Scale has 11 grades, from Flawless to Included, which describe the appearance of a diamond under 10x magnification.
Flawless & Internally Flawless
No inclusions or blemishes visible under 10x magnification. Extremely rare and valuable.
Very Very Slightly Included
Inclusions are difficult to see under 10x magnification. Excellent quality and value.
Very Slightly Included
Inclusions are minor and difficult to see under 10x magnification. Excellent value for engagement rings.
Slightly Included
Inclusions are noticeable under 10x magnification but often eye-clean. Great value option.
Included
Inclusions are obvious under 10x magnification and may be visible to the naked eye. Budget-friendly option.
Our Expert Recommendation
For the best value in an engagement ring, we recommend VS1-VS2 clarity diamonds. These grades offer eye-clean diamonds at an excellent price point, allowing you to invest more in cut quality and carat weight.
For most engagement rings, VS1 or VS2 clarity offers the best value. These grades are typically eye-clean, meaning inclusions are not visible to the naked eye, while being more affordable than higher clarity grades.
In most cases, inclusions do not affect durability. However, certain types of inclusions near the surface or in vulnerable areas may make a diamond more susceptible to chipping. This is rare and typically only a concern in lower clarity grades.
Eye-clean means that inclusions are not visible to the naked eye when viewing the diamond from a normal distance. Many VS and SI clarity diamonds are eye-clean, offering excellent value.
Clarity significantly impacts price. Flawless diamonds are extremely rare and expensive, while SI clarity diamonds offer substantial savings. The price difference between clarity grades can be 10-20% or more.
The GIA clarity scale is the industry standard for grading diamond clarity. It ranges from Flawless (FL) to Included (I3), with 11 grades total. Each grade represents the visibility of inclusions under 10x magnification.
