Lab-Grown Diamonds Guide
Lab-Grown Diamonds: The Complete Guide
Everything you need to know before you buy — from how lab diamonds are made to how they compare with mined stones.
What Is a Lab-Grown Diamond?
A lab-grown diamond is a real diamond — same chemical composition, same crystal structure, same sparkle — grown in a laboratory instead of mined from the earth. It's not a simulant like cubic zirconia or moissanite. Under a jeweller's loupe, and even in most professional testing, a lab diamond and a mined diamond are indistinguishable.
Because they're created in controlled conditions rather than pulled out of the ground, lab-grown diamonds typically cost 30-60% less than equivalent mined stones. That's why more and more couples are choosing them for engagement rings and fine jewellery.
How Lab Diamonds Are Made
There are two main processes:
- HPHT (High Pressure, High Temperature): mimics the natural conditions deep in the earth — carbon is pressed under intense heat and pressure until it crystallises.
- CVD (Chemical Vapour Deposition): a diamond seed is placed in a chamber of carbon-rich gas, where layers of diamond slowly grow.
Both take several weeks to produce a gem-quality rough stone, which is then cut and polished exactly like a mined diamond.
Lab-Grown vs Mined Diamonds
- Identical beauty: same 4Cs — cut, colour, clarity, carat.
- Ethical and sustainable: no mining, no conflict diamonds, far smaller environmental footprint.
- Better value: you get a larger, higher-quality stone for the same budget.
- Certified: every stone comes with a grading report, same as mined.
